The job

As a second-year apprentice heavy diesel mechanic, Matthew spends his days working on large mining equipment – repairing, calibrating, and testing machinery like D11 dozers and excavators. No two days are the same, which keeps the job interesting and hands-on.

The impact

Matthew plays a key role in keeping mining operations safe, efficient, and productive by ensuring the heavy machinery is running smoothly.

The study path

Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) followed by a Diesel Fitter Apprenticeship

Matthew started studying Mechanical Engineering at university before realising his passion was in hands-on mechanical work. He began his Heavy Diesel Fitter apprenticeship at Hastings Deering’s Caterpillar training facility in Brisbane, where he continues to learn every day. A bachelor’s degree is not necessary to enter this trade.
